Project: Konvergence Project

Department: Art

Primary Investigator: Susan Ewing and Vratislav Novak

Purpose: Konvergence is a 16' X 16' X 16' kinetic/interactive sculpture constructed from acrylic mirror mounted on a steel structure with a 19' titanium moving linear element. It was initially designed for installation in the Weston Art Gallery, Aronoff Center for the Arts, Cincinnati, Ohio (June 13 - August 31, 2003), followed by installation in the Miami University Art Museum (February 10 - March 26, 2004). The work abstractly expresses the geometry of a star.

IL Comment: Because this was an evolving art project, the user brought concepts rather than specifications to the IL. We developed specifications and preliminary designs to support and move the 19-foot long, 4-inch diameter titanium pole via interaction with an exhibit visitor. After review with the user, mechanisms to support the pole and guides for the cables to move it were designed and constructed. Custom electronics were designed and built to translate joystick motions by the exhibit visitor into commands to a two-axis motion control system. IL staff installed and debugged the kinetics system on site at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati and later assisted with the re-installation at the MU Art Museum.

Cost to researcher: $3076.90
